Let’s Get Lyrical! Is a joint project between Glasgow UNESCO City of Music and Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature that is taking place in Feb 2011. There are a number of events going on throughout both cities as well as competitions and a dedicated website where people can submit their lyric stories http://let’sgetlyrical.com.

There is also an education pack that goes along with the campaign which will be available to download from the website as of the 1st Feb.

http://letsgetlyrical.com/educational/schools/
Song lyrics can inspire us, teach us, stick in our heads for years to come. As part of Let’s Get Lyrical, we’ve created a special education pack of activities and worksheets for using song lyrics in the classroom. These are designed to be used by all ages as a way into creating new stories and lyrics and as a starting point to encourage thinking about why a particular song’s lyrics mean something to an individual. The Curriculum for Excellence experiences and outcomes that can be met by doing these activities are identified at the end of the resources document, provided along with the pack.
The education pack will be freely available on the above website from 1st Feb 2011, for learners of all ages, including:

Early Years
Primary School
High School
Adult Learners

Following many of the activities, pupils are encouraged to ‘post’ their ideas, lyrics and writing about what makes a particular song important to them on the Let’s Get Lyrical website.Downloadable versions of materials will be available online from 1st February 2011

Priority is now being given to artists and small organisations and galleries who should submit well argued, imaginative proposals for making or producing new work or exhibitions.
Arts Festivals are not supported.
The Trust normally awards grants of up to £2,000, but larger grants may be considered. The next deadline is the 10th January 2011.

This thought-provoking and surprisingly uplifting exhibition is the result of a year’s work by Glasgow based artist, Gillian Steel. In the exhibition, Gillian explores the theme of mortality through a series of interviews with both members of the public and people whose work touches on the subject of death. The responses Gillian encountered were ‘passionate and insightful’, revealing ‘a highly personalised range of belief systems.’
St Mungo Museum and StardustSome thoughts on death has been developed by artist Gillian Steel with the help of St Mungo Museum. Gillian, who describes herself as being in the ‘privileged position of listener, collector and conduit’, has interacted with over one hundred people through her work for Stardust. This multi-media exhibition presents a slice of the contributions Gillian listened to, collected and recorded during the course of her journey.

NGARN Arts and Health Framework

The power of the arts to have a positive impact on the health of an individual, both directly and indirectly, has long been recognised. The North Glasgow Arts and Regeneration Network (NGARN) recognises this power and, in partnership with the North Glasgow Healthy Living Community (HLC), has worked to develop a flexible framework to allow organisations to investigate, evaluate and articulate this impact.

Research into existing planning and evaluation methods has been undertaken to ensure the framework achieves appropriate outcomes that will be recognised within both the arts and health sectors. In particular, this framework has adopted many of the key principles within the Health Impact Assessment (HIA) model, a structure that is recognised by the World Health Organisation.

This framework and toolkit has been designed for use by organisations delivering arts provision within the local area and beyond. It aims to compliment and enhance existing planning, monitoring and evaluation processes already undertaken by organisations. Its flexibility will allow it to be adapted to projects and programmes operating on different scales, across art forms and accommodating the widest definitions of health.

It is to be hoped that, through further demonstration and reporting of evidence, greater support can be gained and provision of arts opportunities developed for the benefit of our communities.
